Alex Curley

My work explores the relationship between human-made space and the natural world. Like a window, my art is a visual portal creating openings on and within a surface. With painting, collage, and installation, my work acts as a medium to explore imagined collisions of interior and exterior landscapes, presenting a new depiction of space with characteristics of both. The artworks created out of my constructed worlds contest our experiences of physical space. While these images struggle with the mirages of themselves and of their certainty in a real-world context, these intersections of interior space, land, sky, and sea illustrate the connective energy that flows through all things.

In addition to my creative practice, I have 4 years of teaching experience as a full-time elementary art teacher, and in 2016 I started Morning Portal Design, an art and design brand with my passion for handmade and love of making at its core. I am currently a community artist at The District Clay Center in Washington, DC and I create all my artworks in my home studio in the Bloomingdale neighborhood.
